Oshkosh 2023 outbound route

David and I are flying Cessna T310Q N302MC to Oshkosh this year. Starting from the aircraft’s base at Hawarden near Chester in the UK (EGNR), our route west takes us via:

  • Day 1
    • Wick, Scotland (EGPC)
    • Reykjavík, Iceland (BIRK)
  • Day 2
    • Kangerlussuaq (formerly Sondrestromfjord Air Base), Greenland (BGSF)
    • Iqaluit (also known as Frobisher Bay), Canada (CYFB)
  • Day 3
    • La Grande Rivière, Canada (CYGL)
    • Sault Ste. Marie, USA (KANJ)
    • Oshkosk, USA (KOSH)

This is sometimes known as the Northern route, as it passes over the north of Greenland and its icecap. The views should be stunning!

The stops are needed as light aircraft just don’t have the endurance to go non-stop, and at the speeds we’ll be flying, neither do we. The three days will include about 5, 6, and 7 hours of flying each.

At Wick, Scotland we’ll collect immersion suits and a satellite phone. We’re flying a twin engine aircraft so these are belt-and-braces safety measures which we hopefully won’t have to rely on at any point, but better to have them and not need them than vice versa. I’m sure photos of the blobby suits will be shared for everyone’s enjoyment when the time comes. They’re always entertaining things to don.
